Two Great Congregations, One Location

This summer, two historic New Albany congregations will launch a bold and innovative new partnership by becoming two congregations in one location.

On Sunday, June 30, 2019, Park Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Centenary United Methodist Church will begin sharing space and ministry at Park’s current location of 2231 Green Valley Road.

Last November, Centenary decided to sell its 180-year-old church building and surrounding property on Spring Street and search for a new home. As news of this decision began to spread, Park’s pastor, Rev. Lee Huckleberry, reached out to Centenary’s pastor, Rev. Harriett Akins-Banman, and the two began to discuss the potential for a partnership. Guided by a shared devotion to mission and love of neighbor, a fresh vision began to emerge and leaders from both churches voted to move forward.

It is important to note that this is not a merger of the two churches. Both will retain their denominational affiliation, governance structure, and financial autonomy. Centenary will worship on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am (followed by Sunday School at 10:30 am), and Park will worship at 10:30 am (preceded by Sunday School at 9:00 am).

A centerpiece of this shared endeavor is a commitment to continue a vital feeding ministry to New Albany residents. Centenary’s Christ Kitchen will relocate to Park beginning Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 pm and will continue its schedule of two free meals per week, 6:00 pm on Thursday and 4:30 pm on Sunday. Furthermore, Park will continue its Open Table Dinner on the third Monday of the month at 5:00 pm.

Centenary and Park plan to hold several joint worship services throughout the year and host several community-wide events.
